With 2022 coming close to an end, let’s take a look at some of the exciting Horror Films to hit screens in 2023.
Get your Popcorn ready because 2023 is shaping up to be an awesome year for horror, with some familiar classics and some intriguing originals.
1. M3gan-January 6th
A Creepy Doll tale for the modern age directed by modern Horror legend, James Wan, combined with a great leading cast? That sounds like a fun time to me.
The premise is that Gemma, played by Allison Williams (Get Out), is now the guardian of Cady, played by Violet McGraw (Doctor Sleep). Being that Gemma is a Robotics engineer she thinks it may be helpful to build Cady a friend to help her cope with the loss of her parents. All is great first….I think you can guess the rest.

2. True Haunting-January 6th
This film is based of a true story.
In 1971 NBC Televised a real life Exorcism. The Exorcism seemingly worked on TV, but for the Becket Family, not so much. Love a good exorcism film and a “based on a true story film”. Definitely excited for this one!
Directed by Gary Fleder (Kiss the Girls). Leading cast, Erin Moriarty (The Boys),Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Harriet Slater (Pennyworth).

3. Snow Falls- January 17th

A simple and effective sounding plot: Five friends go on vacation at a remote Cabin, there is a bad snow storm and they become stuck. It’s a horror film so of course there is a twist, and an interesting one at that. They one by one go mad and attack each other, and at one point they begin to suspect it is the snow itself that is driving them mad.
Sounds ridiculous and I’m here for it. Check out the trailer, looks like a fun ride.
4. Fear-January 17th

One of the things I love about the Horror genre is its ability to take a snap shot of current societal fears. If you take a look at a group of horror films during any time period, there tends to be a common theme that reflects a prevalent fear during that time in History. Such is the case with this film. This film was actually filmed during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 17 days.
A vacation turns into a disaster after a contagious airborne threat. This plot sound familiar and all too real, but it could make for a good film.
Directed by Deon Taylor (Nige Tales)

5. Knock at the Cabin-February 3rd

The latest horror film from The King of Hit or Miss films, M. Night Shayamalan.
I will have to say it has a great leading cast, Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy). Rupert Grint in particular, has really impressed me as of late, with his apperence in the Netflix show Guilllermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and the Apple+ show M. Night Shamalyan’s Servant.
The premise is that a family vacationing in a remote cabin and they are taken hostage and given a choice that will choose the fate of the world, as in if they don’t choose the apocalypse will happen.
The trailer is very intriguing and does the trick of hooking you in.

11. Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey-February 15th

Cheesy Horror is what solidified my love of horror. Many times, I find myself looking for over the top, poorly rated films, because it’s SO MUCH FUN!
That being said, I am so excited to see this.
The premise is that Christopher Robin left the Hundred Acre Woods behind when he left for college, this does not sit too well with Winnie the Pooh and friends. So instead of going to look for him, as they do in Disney versions, they become feral and go on a killing rampage. Sounds like a Grade A B-horror flick to me!

6. Scream 6-March 10th

Here at Horror Time we are huge Slasher film fans, so we are super excited over the recent surge in slasher films with the reboot of the Halloween series, and now Scream. Ghost Face is a classic and it’s exciting to see the character back.
This one picks up after the last one. The four remaining survivors, leave Woodsboro and venture off to New York City; Ghost Face of course follows them. We haven’t seen this plot since Jason takes Manhattan, and I for one can’t wait!
There was controversy at the start of production due to Neve Campbell not returning for this installment due to Salary. It’s quite the shame that they couldn’t come to an agreement with the Original Scream Final Girl. Hopefully it won’t hurt the quality of the film.
7. The Pope’s Exorcist-April 7th

Based on the True Story of Roman Catholic Priest, Father Gabriel Amorth. Gabriel was the chief exorcist of the Vatican and reportedly performed over 100,00 Exorcisms in his lifetime until his death in 2016. He details many of these accounts in two published Memoirs
Father Gabriel is played by Russell Crowe and directed by Julius Avery (Overlord).
8. Evil Dead Rise-April 21st

Love the original. Love the 2013 Remake. Can’t wait for this one. Needless to say, very excited for this one!
9. Insidious 5-July 7th

Not sure why this is still going? I enjoyed the first one when it came out. The concept of astral projection was a refreshing and fun look into the paranormal, however, I recently revisited the first one, and I got to say I don’t think it holds up that well. The sequels left a lot to be desired, but hopefully this revitalizes, what I feel, is a dead franchise.
10. Last Voyage of the Demeter-August 11th

This is one of the more interesting concepts on the list.
The film is based off the Bram Stocker classic 1897 Novel Dracula. What is really cool about this concept is that it is based off of one chapter from the book, The Captain Log. The film takes place aboard the Russian Schooner, the Demeter. Dracula charters this vessel to carry wooden crates, and unbeknownst to the crew they were transporting the sleeping vampire. This film will detail the strange events that lead to the disappearance of the crew when it arrives in port.
I’m a sucker (no pun intended) when it comes to classic Literary Monsters, so this is easily one of my most anticipated films this year.
It is directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) and stars Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), and Javier Botet (IT) as Dracula.
12. The Nun 2
The next entry in The Conjuring Universe and the sequel to the 2018 film The Nun. Not much has been said concerning plot.

The Conjuring Universe has been a controversial one among Horror fans,to say the least. Some love it, some hate it, and the real Life Warrens are very controversial figures in the Paranormal world.
I personally have a great time with the films. I don’t think they are amazing by any stretch, but they do offer some good, creepy visuals, and some classic paranormal horror fun. Most of the entries into this universe, outside of Conjuring 1 and 2, are OK. I’ll definitely be watching this one though. The Nun is one of the best character designs to come out of the franchise. I’m excited to see it either way.
13. The Exorcist

Coming off the success of the New Halloween Trilogy, David Gordon Green, for better or for worse, has now set his eyes on creating a sequel trilogy to the classic 1973 horror film The Exorcist.
I say for better or for worse because the Halloween Trilogy divided Horror Fans just a bit.
I for one, love his take on Halloween, and I’m excited to see where he take the story of The Exorcist.
14. Saw 10

We are on number 10 now? To be honest, I can’t remember like 5-9. They are fun films to watch, if you have the stomach for it. To me though the first one remains the best, and is up there with one of the best horror films. I’ll definitely watch this, especially since Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw, which is definitely promising. Hopefully he will play a more prominent role than in the previous installments, following his onscreen death in Saw 3 (2006).
I definitely need a refresh of the story though before going in.
It is being directed by Kevin Greutert, who directed Saw 6 and Saw 3D
15. Five Nights at Freddy’s

This film has been in the deepest layer of development hell.
This film has been delayed since at least 2018, with a reported 9 scripts rejected, mostly due to game creator Scott Cawthon not liking any of the scripts. Chris Columbus (Home Alone) recently stepped away from directing, which is a damn shame.
The new director was just announce last month. Emma Tammi who directed the 2018 film, The Wind will be stepping in to direct.
Let’s hope that this film from Blumhouse stays on track and is well worth the wait.
These are just some of the Horror films coming out in 2023; I will cover others in a later post.
Which movies are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments!
